DIY Thread Earrings

I don't wear dangly earrings often, though my earring collection says otherwise. I often feel like stud earrings are more appropriate for my workday attire, which I try to keep fairly simple. These DIY thread earrings, however, might be the exception to this rule. With their shorter drop and clean shape, they're easy elegance in an earring, and I love how they dangle and catch the light. Read on to find out how to make your own DIY thread earrings. It's a piece of cake!

Tools and materials:
Ear threads (mine are 3 1/4 inches in gold, but other sizes and metals are also available, like in 4 inches in silver)
Jewelry pliers
Crystals dangles (from Etsy)

Making these earrings is as simple as opening and closing the loop attached to the ear threads. Just remember, open the loop like the photo above by twisting the loop end away from each other (versus pulling the ends apart) to keep from weakening the loop and ensuring it closes properly. Add the dangles, close the the loop, and wear!

  1. Erin, these looks great! I've always wanted to try threaders but I have such sensitive ears. The link you posted says these are 14k gold... how is the quality? I'm nervous my ears won't like them because it's a chain rather than a post or hook.

    1. Thanks Leah! : ) So far so good for me-- I had no irritation at all wearing them on a 12+ hour day! The trick, I think, is to resist playing with them. Pulling too much might irritate the ear more.

  3. With my short hair, I never wear long earrings, but I love these. The simple little rhinestones on the end are really pretty.

  4. Erin these are incredible!! I had no idea they sold ear threads, and the rhinestone drops are so perfect with them. Easy but looks so much more difficult and expensive than it is!

    1. Thanks, Sarah! I was pretty surprised at how thin the chain was-- my piercings are on the normal/small size and it fits fine!

  9. I recognize that earring model! Beautiful face, amazing ears, perfect to show case earrings on;) I've been loving the pull-through style earrings lately. The idea of making a pair myself is really exciting! I'm thinking either purple or the blue like you did!

  10. I like to put a charm on the end (instead of a bead dangle) then just side a light weight bead on the chain part..that way i can change out the color of bead to suit my mood or outfit.
