I can't resist including little touches that remind me of my home state of Ohio, like these DIY coasters in the shape of the Buckeye State. Admittedly, not all states would be ideally shaped for a coaster (sorry, Tennessee!) but, made bigger, they would make a great trivet or bulletin board. Keep reading for how to create these easily customizable coasters.
Tools and Materials:
Thin cork board (I purchased mine at Staples for $10)
Craft knife
Marker
Cutting surface
Print out of state of your choice
Scissors
After cutting out the shape of your state from paper, trace it on the cork with your marker. If your state has any straight borders, it helps to link those up with the edges of the cork.
Use the craft knife to cut out along the state's outline, trying to follow the contours.
Repeat to make a complete set, or a whole map!
I couldn't resist making some in the shape of B's home state too. These would be fun to paint as well-- perhaps marking your hometown or favorite city.

Great idea!! :D

DeleteThat's so crazy you just moved to D.C. & are from Ohio .. because I am too!! Well I've been in the DMV area for about 4 years now, but I'm originally from Columbus :) I love d.i.ying & you have some awesome ones, we should colab on one sometime if you're interested!
ReplyDeleteI'm from Ohio, too. Funny.
ReplyDeleteO H I O!
DeleteThis is such a cute idea - did you find the thin bits hard to cut, and are those bits quite weak/easily breakable? I'd love to make one of the UK but worry all the small/thin bits would snap off!
ReplyDeleteThanks Amelia! I made one of NY and long island did break off : ( If you backed the cork with felt attached with glue, I think that wouldn't be a problem. My Ohio ones (with not any really tiny pieces coming off) are holding up great!
DeleteI'm from Ohio but now live in the other Washington. Love the coasters!
