Etsy Labs Hands-On: Natural Dyes

Before all the birthday festivities began last week, my friend Emily and I went to the Etsy Labs in Brooklyn for a fun hands-on workshop on dying with natural materials. Crafts, creative people, and refreshments for free? Yes, please! Here are a few snaps from the event, courtesy of the Etsy Labs flickr. We layered a silk square with naturally dying materials, such as moss, onion skins, and hibiscus, wrapped and tied it tightly around a stick, and then let it stew in a pot of tea to set the dye (the tannins in tea act as a mordant, who knew?).  Check us out with our finished product below!

It was a lot of fun, and I can't what the Etsy Labs rolls out with next!

  1. That does look like a lot of fun! I especially like that more and more people are using natural dyes.

  2. Ohhh, that looks like fun! I've been dyeing fabrics with watered-down acrylic paint, but been wanting to try something more natural. I've heard that spinach and dandelions can also be used (we have enough of those on our lawn to try it out, ha ha).

  3. natural dyes sound like lots of fun! thanks 4 sharing these pics :D
