DIY Flashback: Wire Wrapped Stone Necklace

Left: Kelly Wearstler Right: Thanks, I Made It

Have you ever seen something new and recognized it as old, sometimes very, very old? Beyond the what-goes-around-comes-around cycle of fashion, when I saw this Kelly Wearstler necklace, it instantly reminded me of a literally ancient piece of jewelry I have. (Full disclosure: I'm a big nerd)

The best summer of my life was on an archaeological dig in the Middle East, where manual labor, scorpions and snakes, and a permanent layer of sweat-caked dust were my daily routine. The rock looking chunk, above right, is actually a piece of pottery from around 700 B.C.E. that I made into a pendant to remind me of those 4 a.m. mornings in the desert.

Now to the DIY part: If you find yourself a nice square rock thing (or even a piece of pottery or china), just wrap it with wire, attach to a jump ring, and you've got a new pendant!
